How My News Publishing Site made $200k in 3 years

Note: This is the first article in this series, so I may have missed a few things I want to cover. I’ll keep updating this article and break down additional parts in separate articles. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to drop them below in the comments.

I started this blog to share real insights and methods as I build and test them. The idea is to make things clearer no fluff, just what’s actually working.

A few years ago, I borrowed $400 from my dad to build a publishing site.

At the time, I didn’t fully understand SEO or how media sites worked.
But I had seen something interesting:

A friend of mine had sold his gaming news site for $120,000.

That was enough proof for me, not that it was easy, but that it was possible.

So I decided to build my own.

Early Execution (What I Actually Did)

I started in the gaming and entertainment niche, with a simple goal:

👉 Publish consistently and get distribution

For the first 3 months:

  • I posted articles daily
  • Covered trending topics
  • Occasionally included broader news to capture attention

But the real growth didn’t come from Google initially.

It came from distribution platforms:

  • Reddit
  • Facebook groups

I actively shared content in relevant communities.

When posts performed well on subReddits, they drove thousands of traffic.

The Turning Point

Something interesting started happening when certain posts gained traction.

Other websites began picking up my stories from reddit communities.

In some cases, they referenced my content as a source.

👉 Distribution created attention
👉 Attention created backlinks

Within 3 months:

  • The site reached – 100k monthly traffic
  • Authority metrics started increasing (DR 20+ range)

And then the real shift happened.

When Inbound Demand Started

I remember the first email clearly. An agency from the UK reached out asking:

“Do you accept guest posts?”

They offered $100 for a placement.

At that point, I wasn’t even thinking about selling placements.

But that email changed how I looked at the site.

This is what an inbound email looks like. A recent email from an agency based in Europe.

Soon after:

  • More agencies started reaching out
  • Requests came from the US, UK, Europe, and Asia
  • Some became repeat buyers

👉 I wasn’t chasing clients anymore
👉 Clients were coming to me

Sharing below some of the invoices.

Revenue Breakdown

Initially, I assumed display ads would be the main income source.

That changed quickly.

Monthly averages:

  • AdSense: ~$2,000
  • Sponsored posts / placements: ~$4,000

Peak month:

  • ~$6,000 from ads
  • ~$9,000 from placements

Over time, sponsored content consistently outperformed ads. In 3 years, the site generated $200,000+ in combined revenue

Why This Worked

This wasn’t random. A few key factors made the difference:

1. Niche with demand

Entertainment and news attract:

  • PR agencies
  • content marketers
  • link buyers

A lot of celebrity PR reached out for publishing news regarding their new releases.

I was posting exclusive news pieces on my site, that eventually gave me couple of free wikipedia backlinks.

2. Traffic + geography

Even moderate traffic (10k–20k/month) works if:

  • It’s consistent
  • A good portion comes from the US/UK

3. Perception

The site didn’t look like a “link site” as it is a news publishing site:

  • A real publication
  • Active content
  • Fresh updates

👉 That alone increases buyer trust

4. Inbound > Outreach

This is the biggest advantage. Instead of pitching clients or negotiating constantly the site created inbound demand, repeat buyers and pricing control.

Most people focus on buying backlinks, reselling placements and competing on price

That model has limits like low margins, no control, dependency on others.

I know building a new site with consistent posting takes time. But owning your own sites has its own perks.

👉 Own the site
👉 Control the inventory
👉 Let demand come to you

How You Can Build This in 2026 (Roadmap)

1. Choose a Niche With Buyer Demand

Don’t pick a niche just for traffic. Pick one where the actual demand is.

  • brands spend money
  • agencies need placements

Examples:

  • Finance
  • SaaS / Tech
  • Entertainment
  • Health

2. Build a Legitimate Site

  • Use a brandable domain
  • Keep design clean
  • Add proper pages (About, Contact, etc.)
  • Consistent posting

👉 If it looks like a PBN, buyers won’t trust it

3. Focus on Distribution First

If you are a beginner then in early stages don’t rely only on Google.

Use these platforms to get traffic.

  • Reddit
  • Pinterest
  • Facebook groups

This helps:

  • generate initial traffic
  • create visibility
  • attract early backlinks

4. Reach the Demand Threshold

From my experience, things start changing when:

  • Traffic reaches ~10k/month
  • Content is consistent
  • Site looks active

👉 This is when inbound requests begin

5. Monetize Smartly

Start simple by accepting initial placements, validate demand.

Then gradually increase pricing as the traffic and DA increases.

Build repeat clients by offering them discounts.
